Heber Valley Century: My first bike race!

I know, you are probably wondering when i decided to start biking. As you may have read in several of my posts, i am ultimately training for a marathon. I took up biking as a way to cross train. I have a new love of triathlons and the bike is part of a tri, so it was time i bought a road bike. If you look close, there are little maple leaves on my bike. Yup, she is Canadian. Once i saw those little maple leaves, i was sold. I know those hardcore bikers out there would give me a hard time about that!

So Saturday was the Heber Valley Century bike race. It had a family 25, 30, 60 or 100 mile course. My Aunt and Uncle (Allen and Alicia) thought it would be fun to sign up and do this as a family. Alicia has been biking for months now, so she signed up for the 60 and Allen signed me up with the family. My two little cousins Gavin (8) and Hunter (3) also participated. Way to go Allen for pulling Hunter and pushing Gavin along. Alicia and I left him with the kids..... He is a great Dad.
At mile 10, Soldier Hollow was a big hill, but at the top were drinks, snacks and restrooms! It was a nice surprise after a struggle up that hill. We met the boys at the bottom of the hill and continued on. Alicia and i broke away again and headed past the 25 mile marker. I was feeling good and wanted to push past the 25. Made it to thirty and continued on. Came to a killer hill in Kamas and i mean killer. It was talked about with other bikers at several aid stations, and it did not sound too fun. Alicia and i got to the point where we could see that hill and what was ahead. Alicia trekked on and i sat at the stoplight going back and forth with myself, my sore behind and jello-ee legs. So i crossed the highway and started up that hill.

Made it 47.2 miles before the weather started to get crazy and others were turning around. I was proud of that. I have only been biking for 2 weeks, so that is pretty good for a new comer! Next year... the 100 miler!!

OMG!!!! You are so awesome! Kev bought me a nice bike for Mothers Day, and I have only gone riding once! I only did 18 miles too. That was because some of the girls I was with had to get home, but still it wasn't 47! I really need to get out and start riding.
Here is a little tip for you, coming from a real expert ;), get new peddles with clips. It seriously makes it SOOOOO much easier. Not having to fight keeping your feet on the peddles really helps, especially on the hills! Now, maybe I should learn how to ride. Hee hee!

Kjersten, pedals freak me out. I know i need to....And i know i am going to fall, but i am sure it would have helped me up those hills alot, i guess you have the pushing and pulling force instead of just the pushing eh? Lets go ride together. Pick a day and we can meet up!!!

Jen, Thanks. Love ya!! Go buy a bike!! What do you think Jesse would say? ha!

I see the maple leaves and they are so cute, I also love the colors of your bike. Don't let the hard-core bikers give you a hard time, having your bike be Canadian is extremely important.

Go you, for riding almost 50 miles. That is incredible. We're you so sore the next day? I've been doing spinning classes and I can hardly sit down.
